Recently someone explained to me that her mother had chronic acid reflux. She had tried antacids and prescription acid blockers and symptoms persisted. The truth about acid stomach is that as we get older, stomach acid diminishes. With less stomach acid, food is more challenging to digest and rather than moving to the small intestine it pushed up to the base of the esophagus causing that familiar burning sensation. It's helpful to accompany each meal with a fermented food or apple cider vinegar to support digestion. Another option is to not drink water or other beverages 30 minutes prior to a meal and waiting until 1 hour after a meal to consume water. This will optimize the amount of stomach available to digest food as drinking water with the meal dilutes the stomach acid.
